A cool African craft!
Craft Project Directions:
To make some calabash kitchen ware you will need a calabash, some knives and an adult to help you carve it, a spoon and some dyes to decorate it. If you don't have or can't find a calabash, you can make some imitation ones using a balloon and papier mache.
If you have a calabash (an oddly shaped gourd) when it is ripe, completely scoop out the insides and let it dry in the sun.
When it dries the rind of the calabash will become very hard.
Underneath this very hard layer there is a slightly softer white layer. After the calabash is dried, it can be cut and decorated.
You can simply stain the outer skin with dyes, or you can scrape, carve, or burn decorations in the surface of a calabash (with adult help).
You could also press beads or bits of metal wire into the calabash before it is completely dry to create cool and colorful patterns.
